I've got nothin'

It has been almost a year and the other day a writing prompt came up that motivated me to write this poem.

“I’ve got nothin’,” I said
as I looked out over the pile that
was my clothes, my house, my bed.

It broke my heart
to think of great-grandma’s
antique teacart.

“I’ve got nothin’,” I cried
when I found the body
of my cat who had died.

I see nothing but ash
as we throw the remains of
all my stuff in the trash.

The place still smelled of smoke
but as we cleaned
I realized I was not broke.

I had nothing that day
but over the course of a year
life has found a way.

I was at the end of my rope
until the new house
filled me with hope.

  1. Oh, I cannot even imagine the agony and sense of loss that you've endured. But...as you say, new home brings new hope. Something my grandma used to say was that "we come into the world with nothing and we can take nothing when we go...and it's all gonna burn in the end". She's right, you know. I hope you find peace finding new treasures and joy in creating your beautiful, new home.

  2. A year already! I am sure in ways it feels like yesterday! I love all of the special features you have shared about your new home. The verse is so telling
