Trying new things

Today I decided to test out the dressage saddle that I got from my sister. I've never really ridden dressage and I have no formal training at all in the discipline, but it was nice to see how it all feels. Unfortunately if I want to continue trying to ride dressage, I'm going to have to haul the Bug almost 2 hours away to find any decent trainers.  I can just see Bug doing just about anything you ask her. We went out on the trails for almost 2 hours and rode about 5 and a half miles in that saddle. That was for me to get used to the feel of it all. Bug just took it all in stride and off we went.

  2. Boy, Anna, does she collect well. I wonder who teaches dressage around there. She's sure got the legs and shoulders for it!

  3. Anna, get Kyra Kyrklund's book Dressage with Kyra and read! If you want to get the basics on her for Dressage, that is a very very good place to start. Kind and soft methods. It is more than just collection, it is stretching down through the topline and taking the bit. It is making a "strong" horse that needs very little finger pressure to maintain that collection! Bug can do it and she will like it. You will be pleased with the muscle building results too! Her brother loves his Dressage workouts!!

  4. Wow! She does look well-suited to be a dressage horse. I can just picture her as one of those dancing horses that perform to music. Gorgeous!

So does an English saddle feel a whole lot different to a horse than a western saddle?

I'm not sure how far north you are, but very close to me is an amazing German born certified dressage instructor named Ulla Hudson. She has ridden in FEI Grad Prix and has won USDF gold, silver and bronze medals.

If you're serious about doing dressage and are interested, let me know. I'd be glad to host you and Lady Bug here at my house during your instruction if you need a place to stay. :)
